Frequently asked questions

Why convert M4A to MP3?
M4A is Apple's default audio container and some older players, car stereos and devices do not support it. MP3 plays on literally everything. A single MP3 copy usually solves the compatibility question for good.
Will converting M4A to MP3 reduce the audio quality?
Both are lossy formats, so converting adds one small step. At 320 kbps the result is indistinguishable for normal listening. If you plan to edit the file afterwards, convert once and keep working from that MP3 — every extra round trip between lossy formats adds another generation of loss.
Is M4A the same as AAC?
M4A is the container; the audio inside is usually AAC. The conversion decodes that audio and re-encodes it as MP3 for maximum compatibility.
Where do M4A files usually come from?
Mostly from the Apple world: iPhone Voice Memos, tracks ripped or bought in iTunes, GarageBand exports and some Android recorder apps. That is why the format shows up so often on phones — and why it needs converting for gadgets outside that ecosystem. On Windows such files often refuse to open in built-in players and editors, which is when conversion becomes the quickest fix.
Can I convert Apple Music or other DRM-protected M4A files?
No. Songs downloaded through the Apple Music subscription are DRM-protected and cannot be converted here or in any converter. Regular unprotected M4A files — voice memos, iTunes Store purchases, your own recordings — convert without any issue.
Can I convert all my voice memos to MP3 at once?
Yes. Add any number of M4A files and click Convert — each memo becomes a separate MP3, so you can move a whole archive of recordings to a Windows PC or share it outside Apple apps in one go. There is no practical limit on the number of files in one batch.

About M4A and MP3

Key things to know before you convert M4A to MP3:

M4A

M4A holds AAC audio — the iTunes/Apple Music standard. Better quality per megabyte than MP3; any modern device plays it.

MP3

MP3 is the most compatible audio format in existence: every player of the last 25 years handles it. Less efficient than modern codecs, but compatibility usually wins.
