Frequently asked questions

Is JFIF the same as JPEG?
Yes. JFIF is the technical name for a standard JPEG file, so converting it works exactly like converting any JPG. The .jfif extension is just an unusual label on ordinary JPEG image data.
Why does my phone save photos as .jfif instead of .jpg?
Some Samsung and Android camera apps, and certain browsers when saving from the web, label exported JPEG photos with the .jfif extension. The image itself is identical, so converting it works the same as a .jpg file.
Will converting to PNG improve the quality?
No. A JFIF is already lossy JPEG data, so the PNG preserves exactly what is there but cannot restore detail the JPEG compression discarded. It does prevent any further loss during editing.
How much larger will the PNG be than the JFIF?
Usually several times larger, because PNG is lossless while the JFIF is compressed JPEG. The larger size is worth it for editing or an exact copy, but for simply sharing a photo the original is more compact.
Does the PNG add transparency the JFIF lacked?
No. PNG supports an alpha channel, but a JFIF photo is fully opaque, so the result stays opaque. Converting cannot create transparency that was never in the source image.
When should I pick PNG over JPG for a JFIF?
Choose PNG for screenshots, graphics or images you will edit repeatedly and want kept lossless. Keep JPG for ordinary photos where a small file matters more than pixel-perfect, edit-friendly quality.
Can I convert several JFIF files to PNG at once?
Yes. Add a whole batch of JFIF files and each becomes its own lossless PNG in a single pass, with nothing merged and no limit on the number of files.

About JFIF and PNG

Key things to know before you convert JFIF to PNG:

JFIF

JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is the technical name for standard JPEG images. Files ending in .jfif are ordinary JPEG photos — the extension is common on Samsung devices and some web downloads.

PNG

PNG is the lossless standard for web graphics: screenshots, logos, UI elements and anything with transparency. Pixel-perfect every time, but photos in PNG are 3-10x larger than JPG.
