What is ODT?
OpenDocument was standardised by OASIS in 2005 and ratified as ISO/IEC 26300 the following year, the first document format designed by a committee rather than a vendor. ODT is its word-processing member: a ZIP archive containing `content.xml` for the text, `styles.xml` for formatting and a folder for images, all under a specification anyone can implement.
That openness is the point. Several national and regional governments mandate ODF for public documents precisely because no single company controls it, so records remain readable regardless of which vendor is dominant in twenty years. LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice, Google Docs and Collabora all treat ODT as a first-class format.
Microsoft Word does open and save ODT, but the round trip is imperfect. Complex layouts, advanced field types, some table properties and tracked changes can shift or drop when a document crosses between ODT and DOCX. For simple documents the conversion is clean; for a heavily formatted report it is worth checking the result.

ODT: frequently asked questions
- What can open an ODT file?
- LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice open it natively, and Google Docs, Collabora Online, Microsoft Word and most mobile office apps read it too. It is far from an exotic format — the software you already have almost certainly handles it.
- Can Microsoft Word open ODT?
- Yes, Word has supported OpenDocument text since 2007 and can both open and save it. Support is not perfect: complex layouts, some field types and tracked changes may shift. Simple documents transfer without any visible difference.
- ODT or DOCX — which should I use?
- DOCX if your documents mostly travel to Word users, ODT if you work in LibreOffice or need a vendor-neutral format for archiving or public-sector compliance. Both are ZIP-based XML standards; the practical difference is which ecosystem handles them best.
- Why do some governments require ODF?
- Because no single company controls the specification, so public records cannot be held hostage to one vendor's licensing or product decisions. Several European administrations mandate it for exactly that reason — long-term readability independent of any supplier.
- Does converting ODT to DOCX lose formatting?
- Rarely for ordinary documents. Text, headings, lists, images and simple tables convert cleanly. Losses appear in advanced features — complex frames, certain field codes, some table properties — so check a heavily formatted document after conversion.
- Is ODT a ZIP archive too?
- Yes, like DOCX. Rename a copy to .zip and you can browse `content.xml`, `styles.xml` and the images folder. It is a practical way to extract pictures from a document or to rescue the text from a file that will not open.
