M4V file format

M4V is Apple's variant of MP4, used for iTunes video. Without DRM it is essentially an MP4 with a different extension; with DRM it will not convert at all.

What is M4V?

Apple introduced M4V to mark video files bought or rented from the iTunes Store. Structurally it is the MP4 container with Apple conventions layered on: the same H.264 or HEVC video, usually AAC audio, sometimes Dolby Digital, and iTunes metadata such as artwork, episode numbers and chapter markers.

The distinction that actually matters is DRM. Purchases protected by Apple's FairPlay system are encrypted and tied to your Apple account, so no converter can process them — that is the intended behaviour, not a fault. Files you exported yourself from iMovie, Final Cut or a camera carry no protection and behave exactly like MP4.

For unprotected files, renaming .m4v to .mp4 often makes stubborn players accept them, because the bytes inside are already an MP4. Proper conversion is still the safer route: it normalises the audio track, drops Apple-specific metadata a player may choke on, and guarantees the result opens anywhere.

M4V: frequently asked questions

Is M4V the same as MP4?
Almost. M4V uses the MP4 container with Apple-specific conventions and metadata, and it may carry FairPlay DRM, which plain MP4 never does. An unprotected M4V is effectively an MP4 that is labelled differently.
Can I just rename .m4v to .mp4?
For unprotected files, usually yes — the internal structure is already MP4, so many players accept the renamed file immediately. It is a workaround rather than a fix: a real conversion also handles audio tracks and metadata that some players reject.
Why will my M4V not play or convert?
Because it is DRM-protected. Video bought or rented from the iTunes Store is encrypted with FairPlay and tied to your Apple account, so it plays only in Apple software while the licence is valid. No conversion tool can or should bypass that.
Where do M4V files come from?
iTunes Store purchases and rentals, Apple TV downloads, and exports from iMovie, Final Cut Pro and QuickTime. Some podcast and course platforms distribute video as M4V as well, which is where most unprotected examples come from.
Does converting M4V to MP4 lose quality?
It does not have to. Since the container and codecs usually already match MP4, the video and audio streams can often be copied straight across with no re-encoding, which is instant and completely lossless.
What happens to chapters and subtitles?
M4V files from iTunes often include chapter markers and subtitle tracks that MP4 supports only loosely. Chapters usually survive, subtitles frequently do not. If subtitles matter, extract them separately or burn them into the picture before converting.
