GIF file format

GIF survives on one feature: a short animation that plays by itself in any context that shows an image. Everything else about it was superseded decades ago.

What is GIF?

CompuServe published GIF in 1987 as a way to move pictures over dial-up. Its defining limitation is the palette: an image can use at most 256 distinct colours, chosen per file. On a logo or a line drawing that is plenty. On a photograph or a video frame it is nowhere near enough, so encoders resort to dithering — scattering pixels of the available colours to fake the missing ones, which is the speckled look everyone recognises.

The compression is LZW, lossless within the palette limit. That algorithm was patented by Unisys, and when the company began enforcing the patent in the mid-nineties the web revolted, launched the "Burn All GIFs" campaign and created PNG as a free alternative. The patent expired in 2004, long after the damage was done and PNG had become the standard for static images.

For animation, GIF is astonishingly inefficient. It has no motion compensation whatsoever: every frame is stored as its own image, with only unchanged rectangles skipped. A five-second clip that would be 300 KB as MP4 routinely reaches 5 MB as a GIF. Social platforms know this and quietly transcode uploaded GIFs to video, keeping the name and dropping the format.

GIF: frequently asked questions

Why does my GIF look grainy or banded?
Because the palette holds only 256 colours. A photograph or video frame contains thousands, so the encoder approximates them by dithering — mixing available colours in speckled patterns. Smooth skies and skin tones suffer most. Any format with full colour, such as WebP or MP4, removes the problem entirely.
Why is my GIF file so large?
GIF stores each frame as a nearly complete image and has no motion compensation, so file size grows almost linearly with the number of frames. Video codecs instead store the differences between frames. Cutting frame rate, dimensions and length are the only real levers within the format.
Should I use GIF or MP4 for animation?
MP4 or WebP for anything longer than a second or two — typically five to twenty times smaller with far better colour. Keep GIF only where the destination genuinely requires it: some chat clients, email signatures and older forums that do not embed video.
Can GIF have transparency?
Only the on-or-off kind. One palette entry can be marked transparent, so a pixel is either fully visible or fully invisible, which produces jagged edges on curves and shadows. PNG, WebP and AVIF all offer a graded alpha channel that renders smooth edges properly.
Does converting GIF to MP4 lose quality?
The conversion is lossy, but the result usually looks better rather than worse, because the video codec is not restricted to 256 colours and can spend its bits where they matter. The main thing you lose is autoplay behaviour in contexts that display images but not video.
How do I make a GIF from a video?
Trim to the shortest useful clip, drop the frame rate to 10-15 fps, scale the width down to 480 pixels or less, and let the encoder build an optimised palette from the actual footage. Those four steps decide almost the entire file size.
