How to Make a GIF from MP4 Video

GIF remains the easiest way to embed a short looping animation anywhere — chats, documentation, GitHub README files, presentations. Unlike video, a GIF autoplays everywhere, needs no codecs and no play button.

Convert MP4 to GIF online

  1. Open the MP4 to GIF converter.
  2. Upload your clip (MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI and MKV all work).
  3. Press "Convert" and download the animated GIF.

Converters.live renders GIFs at 12 frames per second and 480 px width — a good balance between smoothness and file size.

Keep your clips short

GIF is an extremely inefficient format: one second of video can become 1-2 MB of GIF. The sweet spot is 2-6 seconds. For anything longer, consider keeping it as a muted looping MP4/WebM video instead — modern platforms autoplay those too, at a tenth of the size.

GIF vs video: when to use which

  • GIF: short UI demos, reactions, anywhere only images are allowed (issue trackers, wikis, marketplaces).
  • MP4/WebM: everything longer than ~6 seconds, anything with sound, social media posts.

Need the reverse? GIF to MP4 typically shrinks the file 5-10x.
