How to Make a GIF from MP4 Video
GIF remains the easiest way to embed a short looping animation anywhere — chats, documentation, GitHub README files, presentations. Unlike video, a GIF autoplays everywhere, needs no codecs and no play button.

Getting the file size down further
Three settings matter more than any other: frame rate, width and duration. Dropping from 24-30 fps (typical video) to 10-15 fps is nearly invisible for most clips and roughly halves the size. Scaling the width down to 320-400 px instead of 480 px trims it further, and every second you cut off the clip saves proportionally. A palette limited to the colors the clip actually uses (rather than a generic 256-color table) also helps on simple, low-color footage like screen recordings.
Where GIFs are actually used today
Despite video being cheaper and better quality, GIF survives because it autoplays with zero user interaction in places that treat it as a plain image: chat apps, GitHub and GitLab READMEs, forum posts, and marketing emails where video embeds are unreliable. Anywhere a play button or a click-to-load step is acceptable, MP4 or WebM wins on quality and file size — GIF's advantage is purely "it just plays, everywhere, instantly."
Looping and trimming before you convert
A GIF that loops cleanly — where the last frame flows naturally back into the first — reads as smoother than one that visibly jumps. Trim the source clip to start and end on similar-looking frames (a still moment, a repeated gesture) rather than converting an arbitrary segment, and the loop will feel intentional instead of accidental.
